All About Softscaping And Hardscaping

By Paul Baker

What is hardscape. Basically, its root words are pretty much definitive. It means hard landscaping. That means theyre materials or structures that are built into the environment and thereby becomes a noticeable part of the landscape. There are rules and principles to follow in what makes a good design. For your landscaping needs, youll have to contact pembroke hardscaping.

Then again, this enterprise is all about balancing elements. In order to do that, you would first have to innately comprehend what goes into landscape design. A building block to that is getting the hang of the two main categories. They arent hard to keep down pat because theyre polar opposites, as different as night and day. However, it isnt about choosing one over the other, or getting one kind of category purely all by itself. Rather, youd have to incorporate both to a certain extent.

You can take the name hardscape literally. Usually, its components are built of hard wearing materials. From that, one can think of concrete, stone, and even wood. That makes them near permanent structures of the scenery, unless, of course, if theyve been deliberately removed or else changed by the elements.

For example, you have sleeper walls, which are useful in hoisting up floor beams, joists, and slabs so that the structure doesnt come into contact with floodwater. Theres also the retaining wall, which prevents the sliding down of mud, rock, and some such down a slippery slope. Drainage systems are also included in it, and they guide floodwater away from the grounds.

Really, though, this grave experimentation can make the whole place lose its curb appeal, and that much you surely wouldnt want. Unless, of course, you dont give a pinch of care on property values. These landscape designs also contribute to the perceived aura of a place. Without a tinge of green, your property will surely not be relaxing and paradise like. With an overabundant and unregulated softscape, however, the place may be on the receiving end of certain problems like flooding, pests, wet rot, and just general over vegetation.

Therefore, its only intuitive that hard landscape comes before softscape. Its the definitive part, as well, because if you mess up in it, then its a downward progression from then on. When the whole enterprise is juxtaposed with house construction, then it functions somewhat like the foundation. You can thus tell for yourself how necessary this step is. This also illustrates the need for why you need a landscapist and designer, so you can put everything into perspective.

Hard landscaping is the bricks and mortar part. Its like the penciled drawing to the painting. That means that only when you complete it can you then finish the whole landscape in earnest. Anyway, lets face it, softscaping is the more fun of the two. It provides the beautifying features of a yard. But theres also a certain sense of satisfaction in doing the outline part with the knowledge that youre actually laying out the foundation for the whole enterprise.

Both kinds are undoubtedly essential in a great landscape design. Weve already mentioned how they have to be integrated into the landscape. However, we havent completely stressed how they have to be coordinated, as well. Theyll have to complete each other for maximum aesthetics and function. The mixture has to be great, or it will all end up looking contrived and superficial instead of deliberate.

When alls said and done, this step has a functional but also aesthetic purpose as well. When not carried out properly, everything that will possibly bring you joy about your landscape will go down the drain. Theres no convenience to speak of when you dont have all the issues down pat, such as flooding and unsafe and uneven slopes. And you wont have the satisfaction of beholding a beautiful work of art brought about by great design. Therefore, you stand to benefit a lot when you take this step seriously.
