Caring For Exotic Indoor Houseplants

By James Thomas

Plants are something that lightens up a room and can make any dwelling a home. The style they provide projects a sense of color and exotic flair. Several exotic indoor houseplants can be used to produce amazing results throughout a lifetime. Choosing the right ones depends on the amount of light in the home. Placement is important, though most indoor plants do not like direct sunlight.

The Sago Palm is a very popular choice. These are slow to grow but develop a thick, strong base. The leaves seem tough, they are actually easily damaged. The soil should be kept a bit dry since they are used to arid climates. It also needs plenty of light daily. These do not need to be re-potted for years.

ZZ Plants are seeing an increase in their popularity. Since it is easy to grow, they are the choice of people without a green thumb. They are very forgiving if you forget to water them. They enjoy low light environments, making them great for apartment dwellers. Do not over water or you can easily kill this plant. Err on the side of less water.

Zebra Plants green and white striped leaves are beautiful. In the fall they have a stark yellow flower for several weeks. These plants should not be placed in direct sunlight, but they do enjoy lots of light. Since they typically grow in a rain forest, they are used to a deluge of water and then high humidity. You will want to use a pot that allows plenty of drainage holes where the water can sit below the plant for the humidity.

Using the Elephant's ear can enhance the environment. The reason for its common name is based on the shape of the dark green leaf that is shaped like an arrow or elephant's ear. It is also a dark green and silver veined leaf. These particular plants love humidity. The best way to provide this is to mist them daily. The soil should be allowed to nearly dry out in the winter time. Root rot is a problem with these when there is too much water.

Crab Cactus is a low maintenance option. Though this is a cactus, it is tropical in nature and prefers high humidity. In the fall, beautiful flowers will bloom in red, pink, peach, white and orange. The water should be kept moist but not drenched. After it flowers reduces the amount of water until the springtime.

The Elephant Foot is also known as the Ponytail Palm. They grow from a base that is both bulb shaped and very woody. Being native to the desert, they do not require weekly watering. In fact, they are used to going weeks without it. The air can be dry as well. This is a great option for those with little time to pay attention to the care of a plant.

Adding plants to the home is a great way to help purify the air and liven the place up. Many people fear caring for a plant because they do not know how much to water it. Some exotic plants require quite a bit of knowledge and care, but there are many that are low maintenance and very forgiving to forgetfulness. Desert palms are the best for those that want to try their hand but worry about not getting it just right.
